Formally established in 1925, for 100 years the Royal Australian Corps of Signals has provided the nerve system of the Australian Army. From its beginnings with signal flags, heliographs and Morse code, today the Corps is at the forefront of electronic warfare, signals intelligence, telecommunications, information technology and cyberspace capabilities, providing the signals support to the Australian Army and the Australian Defence Force in peace, crisis and conflict anywhere in the world.

During World War II (1939–45), the Corps distinguished itself across the Middle East and Pacific theatres. The Libyan Desert, Greece, Tobruk, Syria and El Alamein were the initial testing grounds for a Corps that would expand to 25,000 men and be supported by 3,600 members of the Australian Women’s Army Service, many of whom worked in the Army Special Wireless Group, providing timely intercepts of top- secret signals intelligence on the enemy’s intentions.

Members of the Corps have since served with distinction in Korea, Vietnam, the Western Sahara, Cambodia, Somalia, Rwanda, Bougainville, Solomon Islands, East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan and a variety of global contingency operations in support of our national interests. At home, signallers have supported civil authorities during major bushfire and flood events.

The Royal Australian Corps of Signals badge features Mercury, the winged messenger of the gods. Mercury is holding a caduceus in the left hand, with the right hand poised aloft and the left foot standing on a globe. The globe is accompanied above by a scroll bearing the motto "Certa Cito", and below by a boomerang below bearing the inscription "Australia". The badge is surmounted by a detached St Edward’s Crown.

The motto is translated as Swift and Sure, signifying the aim of the signal service – that communication be carried out with maximum speed and certainty.
